I always struggled with math. And like most teenagers, I asked myself that question many times during grade school.
I never took trigonometry - or if I did, I must have slept through it - because - I admit - I have no idea what what an arctangent is. Sure - I could follow the tutorial's instructions and make the frog follow the ladybug - but when I tried to apply the atan2 to other situations in my own variation of the app - they didn't work. I can't apply it because I don't understand it.
Then I looked at the other blocks in the "Math" drawer and realized that I should have probably paid more attention in high school...
So although I didn't have the heart or the concentration this week to tackle basic trig - I had to face the simple fact that if I'm serious about making apps - I'm probably going to have to understand a lot more about math's logic.
One reason that math never appealed to me was because I was never really shown how its principles applied to real life - nor did I ever find the motivation to find that out myself. I think I'm not alone in this! So add another dilemma to the list:
Dilemma #8: I hate math but I most likely need math to program better apps.
Ugh. Suck it up, Kristie!
But on the brighter side - I was really pleased with how easily things went on pretty much every other aspect of the app. I was able to create a relatively complicated one this week with only minor issues. And I'm considering a "choose your own adventure" style app as an option for my final app. In the following week or two I'd like to explore some existing apps that use this concept.
And I guess I'll be busy with a little math as well...
